Watford Complete Signing Of AZ Alkmaar Winger.
Watford have completed their tenth signing of the summer, with AZ Alkmaar winger Steven Berghuis joining the Hornets on a four-year-deal.
The 23 year old, who has been capped at Under-21 level by the Netherlands, joins the Golden Boys after a successful year in the Eredivisie and Watford have fended off interest from PSV to seal the signing of Berghuis.
The winger came through FC Twente’s youth system and made 10 appearances for the Dutch side as a professional, scoring once.
After a successful loan spell at VVV Venlo during the second half of the 2011/12 season, Berghuis was snapped up by AZ Alkmaar in July 2012.
The former Dutch Under-21 international has grown and developed into an important part of AZ’s team since joining in July 2012, establishing himself as one of the best talents in the Eredivisie.
Berghuis made 22 appearances for AZ last season, scoring 11 times, helping them to secure a third place finish in the Eredivisie.
He recorded an average rating of 7.47 and also completed 2.1 successful dribbles on average in each game.
From what I’ve seen and heard of Berghuis, the Dutch winger looks to be another excellent signing for Watford.
A player who has tons of potential and has been touted as one of Dutch football’s rising stars, Berghuis shone in the Eredivisie, so let’s hope that the winger can bring this form into the Premier League.
The fact that the Hornets have beaten off interest from PSV is very impressive and indicates the ambition that the Pozzo family have for Watford, with this signing adding to the exciting list of players that the Hornets have added to the already talented squad.
Things are starting to come along nicely and the squad is really starting to take place for Watford’s opening game against Everton, in just under two weeks’ time.
Welcome to Watford Steven!
