Hornets confirm released list.
Manuel Almunia and Marco Cassetti are two of seven players who have been released by Watford FC this week. Nyron Nosworthy, Fitz Hall, Lucas Neill, Ross Jenkins and Albert Riera whom is joining Udinese this summer will all be leaving the Hornets alongside Almunia and Cassetti. There were no major surprises at the players released. Experienced Italian defender Marco Cassetti confirmed last month via social networking site Twitter that he would be leaving Watford at the end of the month. Cassetti became a fans favorite at Vicarage Road in his two year spell with the club with his cool head when under pressure and his ability to play fantastic balls up field to the striker. For example, his ball to Matej Vydra to set up his first goal vs Leicester in the play off semi final leg 2 at Vicarage Road. It was expected that Cassetti would leave Vicarage Road this year as his family remained behind in Italy meaning that Cassetti had no family with him in England. The 38 year old made 81 appearances for the golden boys scoring once.
Captain and number 1 goalkeeper Manuel Almunia has also been released by Watford FC. With the Hornets signing Heurelho Gomes from Tottenham Hotspur a couple of weeks ago, it was perhaps expected that Almunia would be leaving Watford with rumours are that he wants a return to Spain. Almunia joined Watford in the summer of 2012 and has also made 81 appearances in his two year stay with Watford. The Spaniards name will go down in Watford history after his huge part in the goal that sent Watford to Wembley in the Play Off Semi final leg 2 against Leicester where he made a double save from Anthony Knockhaerts penalty. Although he was liable for an error this season, Almunia has provided an experienced figure within the Watford goal and his two year spell at Watford can be classed as a success.
Fitz Hall and Nyron Nosworthy are two other professionals that are leaving the Hornets. After being released last summer, Fitz Hall rejoined the Hornets back in November on a short term deal which was extended in January till the end of the season. A solid championship defender on his day, Hall's time with Watford has been marred with injury which has restricted him to only 28 appearances in his two year spell with Watford scoring one goal. Hall would be the perfect player for Watford if he wasn’t so injury prone and the fact that he has been in and out of the side due to injuries has been a prominent factor in his release. Nyron Nosworthy is also leaving Watford this summer. Nosworthy has always been a rock for Watford Fc since initially joining on loan in October 2011 and has made 61 appearances for the Hornets scoring twice. It seemed likely that Nosworthy would be released by Watford after spending the latter part of the season on loan at Bristol City after returning from injury earlier on in the season which has ruled him out for over 6 months. A solid championship player, Nosworthy would be a great buy for a lower championship team.
Lucas Neill, Ross Jenkins and Albert Riera are also leaving Watford. Riera joined on a short term deal in March and made 7 appearances for Watford scoring once. The Spaniard is on his way to parent club Udinese in the summer after signing a pre contract agreement with the Italian side after his release from Galatasary in January. Ross Jenkins was always likely to leave the Hornets this summer after not featuring for nearly two years. The academy graduate made 95 appearances for Watford scoring twice. Australian Lucas Neill is possibly the weirdest signing of the season. Signed back in February, Neill only made one appearance for Watford which was a 6 minute cameo against Barnsley in March before he was loaned to Doncaster Rovers for the rest of the season.
Good luck to all the players who are leaving the Hornets this summer!
