Heurelho Gomes Joins Watford FC
Tottenham Hotspurs 33 year old Brazilian goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, this morning signed for Watford FC on a one year deal where the Hornets have the option of a 12 month extension. The goalkeepers contact is up at Tottenham who are not offering him a new deal and Gomes has joined Watford and will officially become a Hornet on July 1st.
Gomes started his career in his home country Brazil where he made 61 appearances in two years at the club. He then joined PSV Eindhoven in 2004 and became a fans favorite where he was known for his outstanding reflexes. In 4 years at the club, Gomes made 129 appearances. Gomes then joined Tottenham in June 2008. He found it difficult at Spurs making a few mistakes however Spurs fans have also seen the good side of him and the Brazilian has made some stunning saves. After falling out of favor due to some high profile mistakes, Tottenham signed Brad Friedel who became Tottenham’s first choice. After becoming a substitute, Gomes then slipped out of the Spurs squad after they signed Carlo Cudicini and Hugo Lloris in recent seasons. Gomes was loaned out to German side Hoffenheim where he was praised for his performances. His loan spell was ended early due to injury therefore restricting Gomes to 9 appearances. As well as experiencing European and Premiership football, Gomes has also been capped 11 times by the Brazilian national team.
Some may criticize the signing of Gomes however I personally feel that Gomes could provide valuable experience to the Hornets. Although he has had a tough time at Spurs, his form at PSV and Hoffenheim indicates that he can be a solid goalkeeper on his day. We can only judge him after he has played 5-10 games so lets all welcome Gomes to Watford FC
