After many weeks of speculation, Watford have announced the signing of Ecuador international Juan Carlos Paredes on a five year deal from Granada. Paredes has been linked with a move to Watford for well over a month now, with the Watford Observer reporting a few weeks ago that a deal for the Ecuadorian had already been agreed. However, after weeks of reports, Watford finally announced the signing of the 27 year old full back yesterday and he will now join up with the Watford squad for pre season.

Paredes has spent the whole of his career to date playing in his native Ecuador. Last season he played for Sporting Barcelona, making 43 appearances scoring once. Previously, he played for Deportivo Quito and he helped the club win the Ecuadorian Sere A title in 2011. He has also played for Huracan SC. Deportivo Cuenca and Rocafuerte.

Paredes can play as full back, wing back or winger and has a quick turn of pace, which was demonstrated in Ecuador’s friendly against England and during the World Cup. The 27 year old is also comfortable on the ball and likes to get forward whenever possible. Furthermore, as well as being an attacking threat, Paredes is also very capable defensively. He also knows where the goal is as well, having scored 7 goals for Deportivo Quito and 11 for Rocafuerte whom he spent a spell on loan with in 2008.

Nicknamed ‘The Ant’, he has also achieved 41 caps for Ecuador and started all of the South American side’s matches in this summer’s world cup which was held in Brazil, playing against France, Honduras and Switzerland putting in some impressive performances.

After his impressive performances at the World Cup, Paredes has decided to join Watford despite rumoured interest from Juventus and looks a very capable player. Commenting on the move, Paredes said: “I wanted to leave my country and test my performances at a higher level. It’s a football country here, and the dream of every player is to come to the best football in the world. The ambition at Watford was a main reason for my decision. My expectations were fulfilled”.

Paredes is the Hornets seventh signing in what has been a very busy summer transfer window for the Hornets who may not have finished their transfer dealings yet. The full back looks another excellent signing on paper and will strengthen the Hornets defence for the upcoming season. Welcome to Watford Juan Carlos!
