East to referee Southampton opener

12/08/2016 10:07

The referee for Watford's opening game of the 2016/17 Premier League season has been announced.

Walter Mazzarri's men will travel to the St Marys Stadium to face Southampton this weekend and Roger East from Wiltshire will be the man-in-the-middle.

East took charge of five matches involving the Hornets last season, two of which resulting in wins for the Golden Boys. Both of those victories came over Newcastle, with an Odion Ighalo double sealing a 2-1 win at St James' Park last September, while a Troy Deeney strike just before half-time meant the Hornets defeated the Magpies in the FA Cup in January.

The Premier League official also refereed Watford's defeats to Leicester (L 2-1), Tottenham Hotspur (L 1-0) and Norwich City (L 4-2) last season.

The Wiltshire official took charge of 39 matches in all competitions during the 2015/16 season, 25 of which coming in the Premier League, and he dished out 119 yellow cards and 2 red.
