Zola resigns but Sannino comes in.
On Monday, it was announced that Head Coach Gianfranco Zola had resigned from his position at Watford. After a run of 9 games without a win and a section of fans become restless and annoyed with the teams performances. Many fans anticipated the news for a while but many thought that he would be sacked and not resign. His first season as manager had been brilliant with free flowing football that no one had expected and the Italian lead us to 3rd place in the table and into the play offs. We could have been been promoted twice on the last day of the season and in the Play Off Final but it wasnt meant to be. Last season bought one of the most memorable moments in Watford history and certainly the best moment I have witnessed at Vicarage Road since i have supported the Hornets. The Deeney goal against Leicester was certainly the best moment of last season and possibly the last four or five seasons. To be on the cusp of going out of the plays offs but 20 seconds later score was just unbelievable and will certainly live in the heart of Watford fans forever. This season was fine up to October and it has gone downhill from their. After nine games without a win, whether Zola should stay or go split fans. But on Monday th news came that Gianfranco Zola had resigned from the club with assistant managers Dodo Sormani and Bastiano Porcu leaving as well. Zola said that he 'Must place Watford Football club first' in his thougts that for that reason was why he resigned. Even though the news was expected, it was still sad to see such an genuine nice guy in the game leave and his open letter to the fans showed what a genuine nice guy he is.
But just two days after Zola's resignation, a new man was appointed as head coach. That man was Italian Guiseppe Sannino who was appointed as Head Coach on a 18 month contract. Who? people asked and some Watford fans outrageously called the appointment disgraceful barely five minutes after he had been appointed. Yes he may not have any Championship language and cannot speak English but give the guy a chance. The 56 year old is fairly experienced in Italy and has had 13 clubs in a 17 coaching career which frigthened fans. But this is due to the fact that Owners of Italian clubs arent very patient Sannino 3 promotions in 4 seasons in Italy and nearly had a 4th when Varese missed out on promotion in the play offs. Sannino then had an impressive season at Siena where he kept them safely in Seria A and lef them to the Coppa Italia semifinals. Sannino then moved to Palermo where he was sacked after three games after achieving one point only to be rehired later on in the season. Despite an impressive series of results with Sannino in charge, the Italian couldnt keep Palermo up. His contract was terminated at the end of the season. Sannino then became manager of Chievo at the start of this season but things didnt work out and he was sacked. Before anyone can say to much, we have to give him a chance and if he can replicate what he achieved at Varese and Siena, Sannino could after all be the right man for the job.
