Watford vs Charlton Match Preview.
Watford play their first Sky Bet Championship match of 2015 at Vicarage Road tomorrow with Charlton Athletic the visitors to the Vic.
The Hornets come into the match in 6th position in the table and could move up to 4th position with a win, whilst Charlton have struggled to keep up their impressive early season form and sit in 14th place in the table.
During the game between the two sides earlier this season, Charlton ran out narrow 1-0 winners thanks to an early Yonni Buyens penalty in the 2nd minute. Watford tried everything in that match and were undeservedly defeated, as they were made to pay for not being ruthless in front of goal.
Charlton are no longer managed by Bob Peeters, who was sacked last weekend after a run of one win in 12. Yet the decision to sack Peeters still came as a surprise given that The Addicks have done reasonably well this season, even though they haven’t been able to retain their fantastic early season form which saw them sitting in 5th position after the reverse fixture with the Golden Boys.
Former Standard Liege Boss Guy Luzon has replaced Peeters at The Valley, with the Israeli entrusted with the responsibility of improving The Addicks fortunes. Luzon has predominantly managed in his native Israel, coaching Hapoel Tel Aviv as well as the Israel Under 21’s, before taking charge of Standard Liege in Belgium in 2013. Despite being appointed on Tuesday, Luzon will not take charge of Charlton at Vicarage Road tomorrow due to work permit issues, with Damian Matthew and Ben Roberts taking temporary charge in his absence.
The key player for Charlton tomorrow will be midfielder and club captain Johnnie Jackson. The Addicks captain spent time on loan with the Hornets when he was on the books at Tottenham Hotspur as a youngster, and the now 32 year old is instrumental for the South London club. Jackson has scored 2 goals in 25 appearances for Charlton this season and is at the heart of all of the Addicks attacks.
Tomorrow’s game will not be easy despite Charlton’s indifferent run of form, and the Golden Boys will have to make a drastic improvement compared to last week’s performance against Huddersfield if they want a chance to gain the 3 points.
For Watford, Heurelho Gomes is a doubt after limping out of last weeks away defeat against Huddersfield. Fernando Forestieri is also a doubt whilst Joel Ekstrand is ruled out through the same back problem which has kept him out for the past month.
For Charlton, Yonni Buyens and Callum Harriot are available after completing their suspensions. Johnnie Jackson and George Tucudean should play whilst Franck Moussa is ruled out.
