The Capital One Cup

The Capital One Cup returns tonight with Football League teams up and down the country, playing their first round matches this evening. Watford are no different, and the Hornets face the short trip to the The Lamex Stadium this evening, to play League 2 side Stevenage. There are no replays in this competition, unlike the FA Cup, therefore meaning that teams face the prospect of extra time and penalties should the scores be level after 90 minutes.

The Hornets played The Boro in a pre season friendly in July 2013 at the Lamex, with Watford running out 0-2 winners. The two sides were supposed to meet again in pre season this year, however the two clubs decided to abandon the fixture, after Watford and Stevenage were paired together in the Capital One Cup.

After a disastrous season last term, where the club finished bottom of League 1, Stevenage have started the 2014/15 season in good fashion, with a 1-0 win over Hartlepool at the weekend with the club looking to make an immediate return to League 1.

The Boro are managed by Graham Westley, who returned for his third spell in charge of the club in March 2013. Westley led the club from the Conference Premier to League 1 in his second spell in charge of the club. Westley guided Stevenage to back to back promotions in the 2009/10 and 2010/11 seasons. During the 2009/10 season, Stevenage earned promotion from the Conference Premier to League 2 after the club won the competition. The following season, Stevenage then won the League 2 Play Off Final at Old Trafford, beating Torquay United 1-0, to seal promotion to League 1.  Westley then left the club in January 2012, to take up the managerial position at Preston North End. It was to be an unsuccessful spell for Wesley in charge of Preston and he was sacked in March 2013. Weeks later, he again returned to Stevenage for his third spell in charge of the club.

Team News.

For Stevenage, the League Two side are without Ronnie Henry, Calvin Zola, Chris Beardsley and Dean Parrett through injury.

For Watford, the Hornets are without Cristian Battochio and Alex Jakubiak as they have been called up by their respective nations. Sean Murray returns from injury for Watford whilst Keith Andrews could make his hornet’s debut. Sean Murray is available for Watford after recovering from a dead leg, whilst Craig Cathcart, Mathias Ranegie, Ikechi Anya and Uche Ikpeazu all miss out due to injury.
