Birmingham 0 - 4 Watford Match Report.
Watford returned to winning ways as the hornets comfortably beat Birmingham 4-0 at St Andrews in front of a huge away day following of 2454 hornet fans. The win moves the Golden Boys up to third position in the table and sees them only 3 points behind Hull City. A Double from Troy Deeney and goals from Ikechi Anya and Almen Abdi sealed the win for the hornets. Gianfranco Zola made four changes to the side that drew 2-2 with Crystal Palace. Fitz Hall and Tommie Hoban missed the match through injury. Nyron Nosworthy took Halls place whilst Marco Cassetti occupied Hobans position on the left hand side of the back three. This meant that Ikechi Anya (Who recently returned from injury) filled in at right wing back whilst Cristian Battochio replaced Jonathan Hogg who dropped to the bench. Troy Deeney had the first chance of the match for the Hornets in the second minute. He rode two challenges before shooting in to the side netting when he really should have pulled it back to Matej Vydra and Nathaniel Chalobah who were unmarked in the area. Soon after, Ikechi Anya saw a shot easily saved by Jack Butland. Paul Robinson was booked in the 17th minute by referee Craig Pawson meaning that he had to cope with the pace of Ikechi Anya for the rest of the game. Watford had two good chances half way through the first half. Firstly, Matej Vydra saw a shot deflected behind from a corner. From the corner on the left, Deeney was unmarked and saw his header go just wide. He aybe should of scored. Then after some great play from the Hornets, Daniel Pudils pass found Almen Abdi whose side footed shot was saved by Jack Butland. Then Birmingham had two good chances. Firstly, from a corner, Nyron Nosworthy did extremly well to block a Steven Caldwell header which looked like it was going on target. Then a few minutes later, Wes Thomas turned Nyron Nosworhty and saw his shot from outside the area go just over Manuel Almunia's bar. But, soon after this Watford went ahead. In the 37th minute, Nathaniel Chalobah won the ball and passed the ball to Ikechi Anya. Anya terrosied Paul Robinson before playing a delightful cross to Boyhood Birmingham fan Deeney who saw his header ripple the back of net giving Jack Butland no chance. This was Deeney's 13th goal of the season meaning that he has now passed the goal tally that he had for the whole of last season. Five minutes later and Watford had their second. Nathaniel Chalobah found Ikechi Anya who had beat the off side trap. Anya then held the ball up before breezing past Paul Robinson and then hit a hard shot which found the back of the net. This was Anya's third goal of the season. Butland would have been dissapointed in the Birmingham goal after he had got a good hand to it but could not prevent the ball going into the net.
Half Time - 0-2
Lee Clarks men came out rejuvinated in the second half. Firstly, Peter Lovenkrands saw a shot go just wide after beating Daniel Pudil. Then two minutes later, Lovenkrands was at it again. This time, he saw a low shot deflected behind for a corner. Later on in the half, Wes Thomas connected with a cross but he saw his header saved by Manuel Almunia. But four minutes later, Watford had their third. Watford broke from a corner with Vydra who held the ball up before passing to Anya who had sprinted over 50 yards to catch up with the Czech international. Anya carried on down the right hand side before squaring to Deeney who easily stroked the ball home to double his tally in the game and make it 3-0. This means that Deeney has scored 14 goals this season equalling his best ever tally for a season. Adam Thompson replaced Daniel Pudil in the 65th minute meaning that Lloyd Doyley took up Pudil's left wing back slot whilst Thompson slotted into the back three. The impressive Ikechi Anya's was bought to an end in the 73rd minute when he was replaced by Sean Murray. The wing back had scored 1 and created 2 during the match. Matej Vydra was then replaced in the 84th minute by Jonathan Hogg. Watford then made it 4-0 in the 89th minute. Cristian Battochio saw a shot saved by the on rushing Butland but the ball bounced straight into the path of Almen Abdi who smacked the ball home from 19 yards to make it 4-0 to the goaden boys and to continue his recent scoring form to make it 3 goals in 3 games for the Swiss midfielder.
